Terry Shade composer / arranger

Terry Shade is a very active orchestra director at Pacific Cascade Middle School in beautiful Issaquah, Washington. Recognized as a string specialist and project facilitator at the middle school level, Ms. Shade presents workshops throughout the US and UK on the subject of building and establishing successful string orchestra programs. Terry is also very busy conducting all state and honor orchestras, working with students from North Carolina, Florida, Oregon, Louisiana, Georgia, Nevada and Washington.

Her past teaching experiences prior to Issaquah have included positions in Atlanta, Georgia (Gwinnett County) and Las Vegas Nevada. Her strong leadership as a mentor/supervisor there prompted the state of Nevada to honor her with the Steve Maytan Contribution to Education Award. Clark County’s orchestra program tripled in size. Terry contributed a chapter in the ASTA Publication String Teaching in America: Strategies for a Diverse Society about her experiences teaching orchestra in at-risk schools throughout her career. A few years ago In her home state of Washington, Mrs. Shade was named the WMEA/American String Teachers Association “Outstanding Orchestra Teacher of the Year” at their yearly state music conference.

Recently, Terry has been invited to be a middle school clinician/adjudicator for the ASTA National Orchestra Festival in Albuquerque, NM in March of 2019. She is also a co-author of the popular comprehensive method book for orchestra: String Basics: Steps to Success for String Orchestra, published by Neil A. Kjos Music Company. The method series is being adopted and enjoyed in the US, the UK, China, Australia and Germany.
