Husa studierte an den Konservatorien in Prag und Paris; zu seinen Lehrern zählten A. Honegger, N. Boulanger, A. Cluytens, E. Bigot, J. Fournet und J. Ridky. Nach Dirigententätigkeit in verschiedenen Ländern Europas und in Amerika wurde er 1954 als Professor für Komposition und Direktor der Universitätsorchester an die Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, berufen. 1959 erhielt er die USA-Staatsbürgerschaft. In seinem umfangreichen Schaffen, das u. a. mit dem Pulitzer Preis für Komposition 1969 ausgezeichnet wurde, wird die an Honegger und Bartók gemahnende kraftvolle Rhythmik, die musikalische Rhetorik, die Individualität innerhalb klassisch gebauter Formen gerühmt. Die beiden Blasorchesterwerke "Music for Prague" und "Apotheosis of this Earth", gehörten zu den ersten dieser Gattung, um aleatorische Verfahren anzuwenden und sind zu Klassikern ihrer Art geworden.
