The fact that music in the Spanish style' is written by non-Spaniards is certainly nothing new: Capriccio Espagnole' by Rimsky-Korsakov, Rhapsodie Espagnol' by Maurice Ravel, The Troubadour' by Giuseppe Verdi, Iberia' by Claude Debussy, Don Quixote' by Richard Strauss or the opera Carmen' by George Bizet are famous examples of how music in this style has become an international affair over the last 150 years. Important and demanding works for symphonic wind orchestra such as Roger Nixon's Fiesta del Pacifico', Clifton Williams' Symphonic Dance No.3, Fiesta and El Camino Real by Alfred Reed are also written in the characteristic Spanish colouring. James Barnes skilfully continues this tradition with Danza Sinfonica'.
The first 50 bars comprise the musical themes that are used in Danza Sinfonica'. The work opens with a solo for marimba and bassoon, after which the main theme flashes up again and again before the timpani sounds slowly disappear into nothingness. A sudden fanfare by the whole orchestra introduces the second main theme. Danza Sinfonica' is in some ways rhapsodic and partly a series of variations, but above all it is dance music. The composition is interspersed with sonorous solo passages, radiant outbursts from the whole orchestra, surprising changes of harmony and a variety of impressive tone colours. In Danza Sinfonica
