Life in The Capital City

Life in The Capital City Timo Forsström

Life in The Capital City is a composition ordered by Soitinmusiikkiliitto. It was first performed in Europe February 2011 by Göteborg Wind Orchestra conducted by Sami Hannula( Sami Ruusuvuori) and in USA/ Midwest Clinic December 2014 by Sibelius Academy Wind Ensemble conducted by Peter Larsen.

First part, Five corners, is named after a junction in Helsinki from where five paths lead to five different atmospheres: to the beat of the downtown, bars on the edge of the city, greenness of a park, seashore and an old churchyard.

Second part, Silent Park, describes the sorrow and pain following the killing of a young girl in a small town in southern Finland in July 2011. The next day park was filled with candles and flowers and despite the vast crowd present, the silence was overwhelming.

The third part, Song of The Old Shipyard, portrays a dockyard for wooden ships in Viapori, an old fortress island just outside Helsinki.
