Handy W(illiam) C(hristopher) geb. in Florence, Alabama, 16. November 1873, New York, 28. März 1958. Im Alter von achtzehn Jahrenver ließ er seine Heimat, um als Trompe ter in verschiedenen Orchestern zu spielen. Im Jahr 1908 wurde er Mitinhaber (mit Harry Pace) eines Musikverlages in Memphis, Tennessee. Dort erschienen seine ersten Kompositionen: Memphis Blues und St. Louis Blues. 1918 über siedelte der Verlag nach New York, um vor allem die Musik afroamerikanischer Komponisten zu drucken. Handy gilt als Father of the Blues, er veröffentlichte aber auch Bücher über Negro Authors and Composers in the USA (1935) und Unsung Americans Sung (1944) sowie eine Selbstbiographie.
