Serge Lancen, zweifellos einer der wichtigsten französischen Komponisten für Blasorchester, ist am 10. Juli 2005 verstorben, wenige Monate vor seinem 83. Geburtstag. In seinen letzten Lebensjahren war er schwer an Alzheimer erkrankt. Der gebürtige Pariser lernte erst mit knapp 40 Jahren das sinfonische Blasorchester kennen - durch seinen Freund Desire Dondeyne, den damaligen Dirigenten des Pariser Polizeiorchesters. Beretis sein erstes Werk für dieses Besetzung, die 1962 entstandene Manhattan Symphonie, wurde ein internationaler Erfolg, nicht zuletzt weil das Werk beim 5. Weltmusikwettbewerb (WMC) 1966 in Kerkrade als Pflichtstück in der 1. Division festgesetzt wurde. Die fünfsätzige musikalische Beschreibung einer Reise nach New York hat sich bis heute im internationalien Repertoire gehalten und ist ein willkommenes Stück für Orchester, denen Kees Vlaks "New York Overture" zu leicht, aber Johan de Meijs "Big Apple"-Sinfonie oder Guido Rennerts "New York" zu schwer sind.
