*Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, 12. Oktober 1872, +London, 26. August 1958. Vaughan Williams studierte in Cambridge und ließ sich von M. Bruch und M. Ravel beraten. 1896 bis 1899 erfüllte er die Organisten Stelle an der South Lambeth Church in London und hielt Vorlesungen in Oxford, 1919 wurde er Kompositionslehrer am Royal College of Music in London. Als Komponist nahm er Anregungen aus der englischen Volksmusik auf.
