Among the forgotten flutists of the nineteenth century, the more so since he seemsto have left behind very few surviving compositions, is Ludwig Stettmeyer of Bavaria. Stettmeyer was born on August 28, 1814 in Munich, thus twenty years after the mostnotable of Munich flutists, Theobald Boehm, who was born in April 1794. We have almost no information regarding Stettmeyers family background or early study of music
, exceptfor the fact that he was a student of Johann Nepomuk Capeller, flutist at the court in Munichfrom 1806 on, and teacher of Theobald Boehm in 1810-1812. He first appears in the press in 1833, when he was not yet nineteen years old.
