Johann Strauß (Sohn) bildete sich gegen den Willen des Vaters zum Musiker und gründete 1844 eine eigene Kapelle, die er nach dem Tod des Vaters mit dessen Orchester vereinigte. 1863 bis 1870 leitete er die Wiener Hofbälle. Er gilt als der "Walzerkönig", der in allen größeren Städten Europas und in den USA frenetisch gefeiert wurde. Ihm verdanken wir die klassischen Wiener Walzer: "An der schönen blauen Donau", op. 134, 1867; "G'schichten aus dem Wiener Wald", op. 325, 1868; "Wiener Blut", op. 354, um 1871; "Rosen aus dem Süden", op. 388, 1880; "Frühlings-stimmen", op. 419, um 1882; "Kaiserwalzer", op. 437, 1888. Mit seinen Operetten errang er unterschiedliche Erfolge; in der Publikumsgunst an der Spitze stehen noch heute: "Die Fledermaus", 1874; "Der Zigeunerbaron", 1885; "Eine Nacht in Venedig", 1883.
