*Dijon, (getauft) 25. September 1683, +Paris, 12. September 1764. Nachdem er 1701 in Mailand die italienische Musik studiert hatte, wirkte er in verschiedenen Städten Frankreichs als Geiger und Organist. 1722 erschien in Paris, wo er anfort lebte, sein erstes musiktheoretisches Werk, der "Traité de l'harmonie", das deshalb besonderes Aufsehen erregte, da es nach den Kontrapunkt- und Generalbasslehren des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts den Schwerpunkt auf die Akkordik legte. Auch als Komponist zählte Rameau zu den herausragenden Erscheinungen seiner Zeit.
