*nahe Edinburgh, 14. September 1864, +London, 25. November 1932. Er begann als Kornettist in Amateurblasorchestern, trat bereits im Alter von sechzehn Jahren in den Militärmusikdienst (1889 in Ruhe) und wurde als Komponist, Dirigent und Organisator des britischen Blasmusikwesens, vor allem als Herausgeber des Boosey & Hawkes-Militärmusik-Journals seit 1913, bekannt. Zahlreiche seiner Märsche sind noch heute populär. Zusammen mit Alfred Zeally schrieb er das Buch "Famous Bands of the British Empire".
