ist neben Johann Sebastian Bach der bedeutendste Tondichter des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die Jugend verbrachte er in seiner Vaterstadt Halle a.d. Saale. Mit 18 Jahren ging er als Geiger an das Hamburger Theater, wo ihn seine ersten Erfolge als Opernkomponist schnell in der musikalischen Welt bekannt machten. 1713 folgte er einer Einladung nach London, das ihm zur zweiten Heimat wurde. Hier schrieb er den Großteil seiner Meisterwerke, vor allem an Opern und Oratorien.

Händel Georg Friedrich geboren in Halle an der Saale, 23. Februar 1685, †London,14. April 1759. Gegen den Willen der Eltern wandte er sich dem Musikerberuf zu, nahm Orgelunterricht, kam 1702 zum Studium an die Universität Halle und wurde dort zum Organisten der reformierten Dom-und Schlosskirche bestellt. Händel interessierte sich vor allem für die hallische “Hautboisten-Companie”des Michael Hyntzsch und dessen Sohn Johann George. Die Oboe sollte Händels Lieblingsinstrument werden. Besonders aber interessierte ihn die Oper. Deshalb gab er die Stelle in Halle nach einem Jahr auf und wandte sich nach Hamburg. Dort gehörte er bald dem Orchester der Oper an und freundete sich mit dem Musiktheoretiker J. Mattheson an. In Hamburg entstanden Händels erste Opernkompositionen. Zum weiteren Studium der Opern-und Oratorienkomposition begab sich Händel 1706 nach Italien, kehrte 1710 nach Deutschland zurück, um in Hannover Hofkapellmeister zu werden. Doch der englische Hof war auf den inzwischen vielerorts gefeierten Händel aufmerksam geworden und bot ihm jene Position an, in der er seine künstlerischen Visionen verwirklichen sollte. Es kam 1719 zur Gründung der Royal Academy of Music London. In rascher Folge entstanden nun Opern, Oratorien, Concerti grossi und -im Jahr 1741 -innerhalb von 24 Tagen, der“Messias”. 1743 komponierte Händel anlässlich des Sieges Georges II. über ein französisches Heer bei Aschaffenburg am Main das berühmte “Dettinger TeDeum”. Für das große Volksfest zur Feier des Friedens von Aachen im Green Park in London entstand die “Feuer werks-Musik” (1749).
