Georg Elgaaen (born 5 July 1922 , died 8 December 2005 in Oslo) was a Norwegian teacher, associate professor and amateur composer. Elgaaen is best known as the author of the song " Voi Voi ", the winner of the first edition of the Melodi Grand Prix in 1960 .
Background
"Voi Voi" was also Norway's first contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest . There it was performed by Nora Brockstedt and ended in fourth place. Since then, "Voi Voi" has been recorded in various versions by a number of artists: the vocal groups Pitsj , Hovedøen Social Club and Bjelleklang have released their versions, while Knut Mikalsen Bopalong Quintet has made a jazz version, and the rap group Superstars has also made their own version of the song.
Elgaaen worked as a language teacher all his life, for many years at Berg gymnas in Oslo. He had no career as a lyricist or composer, but still had many artists and musicians in his circle of friends. "Voi Voi" is pretty much the only song he wrote, but he also delivered the contribution "Viddu ha tjangs" to the Melodi Grand Prix 1969 .
Elgaaen was a big supporter of the Human-Ethical Association , and after his death the rights to "Voi Voi" were transferred to the association. Thus, all future royalties accrue from the song Human-Ethical Association. Before his death, Elgaaen had given a clear message that the income from the song would go to something that was in "his spirit".
