Flotow Friedrich von geb. in Teutendorf bei Sanitz, Mecklenburg, 27. April 1812, †Darmstadt, 24. Januar 1883. Er studierte 1828 bis 1830 bei Anton Reicha in Paris, wo auch seine ersten musikdramatischen Versuche zur Aufführung kamen. Den ersten großen Erfolg erzielte er 1839 mit der Oper “Le Naufrage de la Medusa", die 1845 (neu komponniert) in Hamburg unter dem Titel “Die Matrosen” erstmals in Deutschland aufgeführt wurde. Die 1847 in Wien uraufgeführte Oper“Martha” brachte ihm weltweit Anerkennung ein. Flotow lebte damals abwechselnd in Paris und in Deutschland. Sein Musikstil ist jedoch eher französisch als deutsch inspiriert.
