Er entwuchs der Kompositionsklasse von Koechlin und gehörte der "Groupe des Six" an. Als Komponist wandte er sich vom Impressionismus ab und dem Neoklassizismus zu. Seine Stärke lag in der Vokalmusik, in Ballett und Filmkompositionen.
