*Blâmont, Meurthe et Moselle, 28. September 1870, +Neuilly sur Seine, 17. August 1958. In Nancy und von Fauré und Massenet am Pariser Konservatorium ausgebildet, erhielt er 1900 den Rom Preis zugesprochen. Schmitt blieb 1901 bis 1904 in Rom, bereiste anschließend Deutschland, Österreich und die Türkei (wo "Sélamlik", op. 48, für Blasmusik entstand) und ließ sich dann als Musikkritiker und Komponist in Paris nieder. Von 1921 bis 1924 leitete er das Konservatorium in Lyon.
