Arthur William Benoy was born in Bromley, Kent on 5 June 1913.
He was an enthusiastic pianist and organist and won an organ scholarship to University College, Oxford, where he studied from 1931 to 1935 and emerged with an M.A. in Modern Languages. He spent a further year at the Royal Academy of Music studying composition, conducting, piano, and organ and where he won a Heath-Harrison Travelling Scholarship.
During the Second World War he was a sergeant in the Intelligence Corps. Following his discharge from the services he entered the teaching profession.
He was the Music Advisor for Worcestershire (1950-1974) and was a prolific arranger of music, particularly for schools. He died in Worcester on 7 February 1984.
