Studied music, German language and literature and educational science in Paderborn; after I. and II. After completing his state examination, he studied musicology in Detmold and Mainz, where he received his doctorate in 1987 with a thesis on the history of the military march (summa cum laude, awarded the Johannes Gutenberg University Prize for 1988 by the Department of History); in 1992 he published a book on wind music research - a critical introduction (Wiss. Book Society); from 1981 to 1999 teaching at school, from 1994 to 1999 teaching at the University of Dortmund and at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf; since 1999 Professor of Musicology and Music Pedagogy at the University of Koblenz-Landau, Campus Landau. Most recent publication: "Don't be angry with me for my long silence". The correspondence between Alfred Schnittke and Tilo Medek (1968-1989), with the collaboration of Marion Fürst, Mainz and others, in 2010. For some time now, he has been working on a project on military music in National Socialist Germany and on the emergence of harmony music in the early 18th century.
