Space Symphony was commissioned by Theta Nu Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Northwestern State University Band, which premiered the work, conducted by Williams Brent, in 1986.

The trip into space is first represented by a muted trumpet solo and a section of brass chords moving in parallel motion. The intensity increases with the addition of woodwinds led by the solo flute and clarinet. Part two, Deep Space, features a demanding alto saxophone solo, representing the first meeting with an alien. Part three begins with triplet figures by the timpani which surge into a fast 6/8 rhythm featuring solo oboe and upper woodwinds. Powerful brass and rapidly descending woodwinds signal the return from the exploration of space.
