Until nowadays, La Traviata is still one of the most successful opera's in the music-literature. Giuseppe Verdi compodes this opera in 1853 and together with Rigoletto (1851) and Il Trovatore (1853), La Traviata belongs to the top of Verdi's middle period of composing.
The opera was, as often happened, not an immediate success but within a year this new work of Verdi became very popular in Italy and after that abroad as well.
La Traviata tells the story of the young and beautiful courtesan Violetta who falls in love with Alfredo, an ordinary and poor young man.
She leaves her luxurious live for him and finally offers her love for the sake of the future of Alfredo's family.
