The Afternoon of a Faun (L'Après-Midi d'un Faune) Claude Achille Debussy / Arr. Harold Laurence Walters
Vergriffen (Restexemplare bei uns noch lieferbar!) / Permanently out of Print (we still sell our remaining stock)
With his colorful, dissonant chords that don't resolve and ignore the rules of harmonic progression, Debussy is considered the link between the Romantic/Impressionist era and the twentieth century. Conductor/composer Pierre Boulez dates the beginning of modern music from the score for this work, exclaiming that "the flute of the faun brought new breath to the art of music." Debussy describes his musical interpretation of the poem by Stephane Mallarme on which he based Afternoon of a faun : "...there is a succession of scenes through which pass the desires and dreams of the faun in the heat of the afternoon. Then, tired of pursuing the timorous flight of nymphs and naiads, he succumbs to intoxicating sleep, in which he can finally realize his dreams of possession in universal Nature." In tonight's band transcription, the solo flute at the beginning of the piece is transcribed for clarinet.
