Bleak Forest Andreas Ziegelbäck

Bleak Forest ist ein Blasorchesterstück für kleiner besetzte Ensembles und bietet den Musikern vor allem Raum, ihren Klang und ihr Effektspiel zu verbessern. Die erforderlichen technischen Voraussetzungen sind daher bewusst nicht allzu hoch. Mit diesem Stück gewann der Komponist den VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022. Thematisch ist das Werk von Kindheitserinnerungen des Komponisten geprägt. In seiner Heimat gab es einen düsteren, sagenumwobenen Wald, welcher den Kindern aus dem kleinen Dorf gar magisch erschien. Ohne konkreten Grund geriet jeder Ausflug in diesen Wald zu einem spannenden, zuweilen auch furchteinflößenden Abenteuer. Man erzählte sich sowohl von bedrohlichen Tieren, welche zu Beginn des Stückes zu hören sind, als auch von magischen Wesen. Der Zauber des Waldes wird ab Takt 70 im Andante vertont. Das Fingerschnippen steht für vereinzelte Regentropfen. Ab Takt 99 wird der Marsch nach Hause beschrieben, wobei vereinzelt immer wieder ein mulmiges Gefühl entsteht, wenn sich die Kinder mit ihren fantasievollen Erzählungen gegenseitig verängstigen. Am Ende steht jedoch die sichere Ankunft zu Hause, denn magische Wesen gibt es schließlich doch nur in den Geschichten oder?

"Bleak Forest is a piece for smaller concert bands and offers the musicians above all space to improve their sound and their effect playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately kept low. With this piece, the composer won the VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022.
Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his hometown there was a dark and mysterious forest, that seemed to the children in the small village to be magical. Without a reasonable explanation, every trip into the woods was exciting and somewhat terrifying. There were tales of dangerous animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the piece, as well as magical beasts. The magic of the forest is depicted musically from bar 70 in the andante section. The snapping of the fingers represents single raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, we hear the trek home, with the occasional moments of trepidation as the children spook each other with their fanciful tales. In the end, though, we arrive safely at home because after all, magical beasts only exist in fairy tales don't they?
Andreas Ziegelbäck studied music education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and history at the Paris Lodron Universität, Salzburg. In addition to his studies, he trained in ensemble conducting for wind orchestra with conductor and composer Thomas Doss. It was Doss who sparked Ziegelbäck's interest in composing. In 2021, Andreas Ziegelbäck completed his composition studies with Johannes Maria Staud. In 2020, he took part in a brass band composition masterclass in Bern with Oliver Waespi, followed by a premiere by the Swiss Army Brass Band."

"Bleak Forest [sombre forêt] est une pièce pour orchestre à vent conçue pour de petits ensembles, offrant aux musiciens l'occasion d'améliorer leur son et leurs modes de jeu. Les exigences techniques sont délibérément maintenues à un niveau accessible. Cette composition a remporté le VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022.
Sur le plan thématique, l'uvre est marquée par les souvenirs d'enfance du compositeur. Dans sa région natale, il y avait une forêt sombre et très profonde, décrite par les enfants du petit village comme nimbé de légendes et parfois même, comme magique. Sans raison précise, chaque excursion et voyage dans cette forêt était excitant et parfois effrayant. On racontait des histoires d'animaux menaçants, représentés au début de la pièce, ainsi que de créatures magiques. Le charme de la forêt est décrit musicalement à partir de la mesure 70, dans un mouvement Andante. Les claquements de doigts représentent quelques gouttes de pluie isolées. À partir de la mesure 99, la marche de retour vers la maison est décrite, avec par moments une légère appréhension, car les enfants se sont effrayés mutuellement avec leurs récits imaginatifs. Mais finalement, ils arrivent sains et saufs chez eux, et les créatures mystérieuses ne se trouvent que dans les histoires... ou pas ?
Andreas Ziegelbäck a étudié à l'Université Mozarteum de Salzbourg, l'enseignement musical et à l'université Paris Lodron, l'histoire. Parallèlement à ses études, il a suivi une formation à la direction d'orchestre à vent auprès du chef d'orchestre et compositeur Thomas Doss. C'est aussi Doss qui a suscité son intérêt pour la composition. En 2021, Andreas Ziegelbäck a obtenu son diplôme de composition auprès de Johannes Maria Staud. En 2020, il a participé, à Bern, à une masterclass par Olivier Waespi de composition pour brass band, suivie d'une première mondiale par le Swiss Army Brass Band.
