In the Ancient World the seven most beautiful monuments were called 'The seven Wonders of the World'. In his Symphony nr.1, The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World' the young Dutch composer Alex Poelman has made a musical portrait of these splendid human realizations which are now, but for one, all destroyed. The symphony is masterly and lavishly orchestrated and portrays both the power of the sovereigns of ancient times and the splendour of the most beautiful buildings and works of art they have had built. Moreover, neither the seducing Eastern charm nor the mysterious exotic atmosphere are failing.

Alex Poelman (Arnhem, 1981) studied informatics at the Twente University and plays French horn in several top amateur bands. Under the guidance of David Rowland he wrote his first composition for wind band 'Volcano'. This was followed by 'Theseus', 'Symphony nr. 1 'The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World', 'D-Day' and 'Aquila Chrysaetos'. This symphony was premiered on 28 May 2004 at Enschede. One year later, it was recorded on CD by the new Dutch military band KMKJWF conducted by Norbert Nozy.

V. THE HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON: Babylon, a city on the banks of the river Euphrates in ancient Mesopotamia was flourishing under the reign of King Nabuchodonosor II (6th century B.C.) The Greek historian Herodotus (ca 484-425 B.C.) described the splendour and luxury of this city with, among others, the famous Ishtar Gate and the fabulous hanging gardens often attributed to Semiramis, the legendary queen of Assyria and Babylon.

VI. THE LIGHTHOUSE OF ALEXANDRIA: The isle of Pharos, near the Egyptian city of Alexandria on the Nile delta, was linked to the continent by a 13000 m long mole in 285 B.C. Sostrates of Knidos built a 180 m high white marble tower on it. On top of the tower two fires were kept burning at night, in order to guide the ships. It was destroyed by an earth quake in 1302.

VII. THE COLOSSUS OF RHODOS: In the 3rd century B.C. the seaport town of Rhodos on the Greek island of the same name was very flourishing. In order to commemorate a victory against Demetrios Piorcetos, a huge bronze statue of the sun god Helios was erected in the harbour in 280 B.C. The statue, made by the sculptor Khares, was 35 m high and the ships had to pass between the statue's legs to enter or leave the harbour. The colossus was destroyed by an earth quake in 224 B.C.

With this beautiful original symphony, Alex Poelman has, no doubt, enriched the better concert repertoire for symphonic band.

Dans l'Antiquité on qualifiait les sept plus beaux monuments du monde de 'Les Sept merveilles du Monde'. Dans sa première symphonie 'The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World' (les sept merveilles du monde antique) le jeune compositeur néerlandais Alex Poelman esquisse un portrait musical de ces sept splendides réalisations humaines toutes disparues de nos jours à une exception près. La symphonie est magistralement et richement orchestrée et dépeint aussi bien la puissance des grands souverains de l'Antiquité que la splendeur des somptueux bâtiments et uvres d'art du monde antique. On y trouve également le charme oriental séduisant et l'atmosphère exotique mystérieuse des sites.

Alex Poelman (Arnhem, 1981) a étudié l'informatique à l'Université de Twente et il joue le cor d'harmonie dans plusieurs sociétés d'amateurs. Il a écrit sa première composition pour orchestre à vents « Volcano » avec l'assistance de David Rowland. Cette composition a été suivie de « Theseus », la Symphonie nr.1 « Les Sept Merveilles du Monde », « D-Day » et « Aquila Chrysaetos ». Sa première symphonie a été créée le 28 mai 2004 à Enschede. Un an plus tard, elle a été enregistrée sur CD par le nouvel orchestre militaire KMKJWF sous la direction de Norbert Nozy.

LES JARDINS SUSPENDUS DE BABYLONEBabylone (Babel), une ville située sur les rives de l'Euphrate dans l'ancienne Mésopotamie connut son apogée sous le règne du roi Nabuchodonosor II (6ème siècle av. J.C.). L'historien grec Hérodote (vers 484-425 av. J.C.) décrit la splendeur de cette ville avec , entre autres, la célèbre Porte d'Ishtar et les féeriques 'Jardins suspendus' souvent attribués à Sémiramis, la reine légendaire d'Assyrie et de Babylone.
VI. LE PHARE D'ALEXANDRIEEn 285 av. J.C., Ptolomée II fit relier l'île de Pharos, tout près de la ville égyptienne d'Alexandrie sur le delta du Nil, au continent par un môle de 1300 m. et y fit construire par Sostrate de Cnide une tour de marbre blanc haute de 180 m. Au sommet de cette tour, on entretenait des feux pour guider les navires. La tour fut détruite par un tremblement de terre en 1302.
VII. LE COLOSSE DE RHODES La ville portuaire de Rhodes sur l'île grecque du même nom connut son apogée au 3ème siècle av. J.C. C'est en souvenir d'une victoire contre Démétrios Piorcète que fut érigée en 280 av. J.C. par Charès une statue gigantesque du dieu soleil Hélios. Elle avait une hauteur de 35 m permettant aux navires de passer en dessous pour entrer et quitter le port. L'impressionnante statue fut détruite par un tremblement de terre en 224 av. J.C.
Avec cette magnifique symphonie originale, Alex Poelman a certainement enrichit le répertoire des grands orchestres d'harmonie.

In de Oudheid werden de zeven toenmalige mooiste monumenten 'De Zeven Wereldwonderen' genoemd. In zijn eerste symfonie 'The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World' schildert de Nederlandse componist Alex Poelman een muzikaal portret van deze zeven 'wonderen'. De symfonie is magistraal en rijkelijk georkestreerd en beeldt zowel de kracht die de grote rijken van de Oudheid uitstraalden als de pracht van de mooiste gebouwen en kunstwerken uit, terwijl de verleidelijke Oosterse charme en de geheimzinnige exotische sfeer evenmin ontbreken.

V. DE HANGENDE TUINEN VAN BABYLON: Babylon, een stad aan de oevers van de Eufraat in het Oude Mesopotamië, kende haar grote bloei onder het bewind van koning Nabuchodonosor II (6de eeuw v.Chr.). De geschiedschrijver Herodotos (ca 484-425 v.Chr.) beschreef de pracht van deze stad met o.m. de beroemde Poort van Ishtar en de sprookjesachtige 'hangende tuinen' die vaak aan de legendarische koningin van Assyrië en Babylon, Semiramis werden toegeschreven.

VI. DE VUURTOREN VAN ALEXANDRIË: Het eiland Pharos in de buurt van de Egyptische stad Alexandrië aan de monding van de Nijl werd in 285 v.Chr. Door een dam met de stad verbonden en Sostrates van Knidos bouwde er een witte marmeren toren van 180 m hoog waarop 's nachts vuren brandden om de schepen de weg te wijzen. De toren werd in 1302 door een aardbeving verwoest.

VII. DE KOLOS VAN RHODOS: In de 3de eeuw v.Chr. Kende de havenstad Rhodos op het gelijknamige Griekse eiland een grote bloei. Na een grote overwinning werd in 280 v.Chr. In de haven een reusachtig bronzen beeld van de zonnegod Helios geplaatst. Het was vervaardigd door de beeldhouwer Khares en 35 m hoog, zodat de schepen onder de benen van het beeld door de haven in en uit vaarden. In beeld werd in 224 v.Chr. Door een aardbeving verwoest.

Met deze prachtige originele symfonie schreef Alex Poelman ongetwijfeld een erg waardevol nieuw concertwerk voor groot harmonieorkest.
