Geboren in Cheltenham, 21. September 1874, +London, 25. Mai 1934. Holst besuchte das Royal College of Music in London, musste die vielversprechend begonnene Pianistenlaufbahn aus gesundheitlichen Gründen jedoch aufgeben. Als Posaunist im Orchester der Carl Rosa Opera Company und als Lehrer brachte er sich weiter. Für den Komponisten Holst wurde die Beschäftigung mit dem englischen Volkslied richtungsweisend. 1919 bis 1923 unterrichtete er Komposition am Royal College of Music und wurde Musikdirektor an der Reading University. Doch seine Krankheit verschlechterte sich; deshalb trat er 1925 von allen Ämtern zurück und lebte bis zu seinem Tod nur noch der Komposition.
