*Chicago, 17. April 1933. Tyra studierte an der Northwestern University in Evanston und promovierte zum Dr. phil. an der University in Michigan. Zu seinen Komposi-tionslehrern zählten Robert Delaney, George B. Wilson und Leslie Bassett. Als Musikpädagoge gehörte er verschiedenen Schulen und Universitäten an, an der US Navy School of Music arbeitete er als Arrangeur.
