Sergio Azevedo composer

Sérgio Azevedo was born in Coimbra in 1968.

He studied composition at the Academia de Amadores de Música with Fernando Lopes-Graça and completed his advanced studies in composition, graduating with the highest classification, from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML), where he worked with Constança Capdeville and Christopher Bochmann. In 2012 he got a doctoral degree at the University of Minho’s “Instituto da Educação” (IE) under the orientation of Elisa Lessa and Christopher Bochmann.

Sérgio Azevedo has won various composition prizes, and his works have been commissioned and performed throughout the world by the some of the most prestigious musicians, such as Artur Pizarro, António Rosado, Luca Pffaf, Álvaro Cassuto, Lorraine Vaillancourt, Brian Schembri, Fabian Panisello, Aline Czerny, Marc Foster, Ronald Corp, Remix Ensemble, Orchestrutópica, Galliard Ensemble, Proyecto Gerhard, Le Concert Impromptu, Ensemble Télémaque, Plural Ensemble and Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne.

He has published two books: A Invenção dos Sons (The Invention of the Sounds, Caminho, 1999); and Olga Prats - Um Piano Singular (Olga Prats – An Extraordinary Piano, Bizâncio, 2007). He also contributes articles to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.

Sérgio Azevedo teaches composition at the ESML and collaborates with the RDP - Antena 2 (National Broadcasting) since 1993. He is also the artistic director of the complete edition of the works of Fernando Lopes-Graça, an initiative of the Museu da Música Portuguesa (Cascais).
