Als Sohn ehemaliger Sklaven hatte er kaum die Chance auf einen geregelten Musikunterricht. 1884 schloss er sich wandernden Musikanten an. Im Jahr 1896 ließ er sich in Sedalia, Missouri nieder, und hier entstand jene Gattung der Musik, die ihn berühmt werden ließ: der Ragtime.
