*Kamsko-Votkinsk, Gov. Vjatka (heute Udmurtische ASSR), 25. April (7. Mai) 1840, +St. Petersburg, 25. Oktober (6. November) 1893. Bei N. I. Zaremba, A. Rubinstein, Ciardi und H. Stiehl in St. Petersburg erhielt er von 1861 bis 1865 die Musikausbildung. Bereits 1866 wurde er als Theorielehrer an das Konservatorium nach Moskau berufen. In seinem Schaffen ist Tschaikowsky westlichen Vorbildern, den deutschen Romantikern, dem Italiener Belli, den Franzosen Meyerbeer, Berlioz, Gounod und Bizet verbunden. Russisch nationale Elemente kommen in seiner Musik kaum zum Ausdruck. Seine Orchesterwerke wurden vielfach für Blasmusik bearbeitet.
