Michael DeMurga composer

Michael (Manuel) de Murga is Associate Professor of Music at Stetson University. He received both his Master of Arts and Ph. D. degrees in composition from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He completed a Bachelor of Music degree (summa cum laude) at Boston University.

DeMurga's compositions have received international performances at concerts and music festivals in the United States, Europe and Australia by performing ensembles and soloists such as the CORE Ensemble, the Florida State University Faculty String Quartet, the Orlando Symphony Quartet, Marimolin, the Miami String Quartet, the New World Symphony, Virtuosi of the New World Symphony, cellist David Bjella, pianist David Mattingly and flutist Nestor Torres. Recent festival performances include the 2001 Queensland Biennial, the 2000 Indiana State University Contemporary Music Festival, the 2000 Rockport Chamber Music Festival and the 1999 "Contrasts" Contemporary Music Festival in Lviv, Ukraine. Among his awards and grants are the 2000 Florida State Music Teachers Association Commission, the 1998 Kubik International Prize in Composition, two Eastman awards (Hanson Orchestral Prize, 1991; Gitelman Award, 1995) and the 1990 Marimolin Prize. His compositions can be heard on the GM Recordings label.

DeMurga studied composition with Samuel Adler, David Liptak, Robert Morris, Christopher Rouse, and Joseph Schawantner and computer music with Allan Schindler. He has previously taught at the University of Miami and the New World School for the Arts. He currently teaches composition and computer music at Stetson University.
