Marios Stylianou composer

Marios STYLIANOU was born in Cyprus in 1986. At a very early age he started taking piano lessons, which subsequently led to theory, harmony, solfege, history and form of music in the Pancyprian Odeon in Cyprus. In parallel, he gave his ABRSM exams in piano, trombone and theory of music achieving distinction marks.

Marios at the beginning went off to study Civil Engineering in the UK in September 2006, which he completed with first class, and afterwards he realised his long-life passion in music, thus he decided to pursue a degree in music. Therefore he studied BA in Music at the University of Southampton in the UK, and graduated with upper second class in June 2013, having majored mostly in conducting and composition modules. Amongst his teachers were Robin Browning, Ben Oliver, Matthew Shlomowitz, Matthew Scott and Andrew Fisher.

Throughout his music studies, Marios also was a part of various musical ensembles and orchestras, the most important being a gospel choir, for which he was the main Musical Director for a year, being responsible to teach them, conduct them and arrange music for them, thus enhancing his communication and leadership skills as well. Furthermore, he was responsible for the formation of two chamber orchestras of his own, in regards to players, music, rehearsal times and venues, for his final-year conducting recitals. Lastly he led a small jazz choir in a concert with the famous jazz composer and pianist Robert Mitchell and his band.

Ever since he finished his studies in the UK, Marios has been enjoying a busy musician life in Cyprus, especially as a performer in various bands, and has frequently appeared as an extra trombone player in the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. Furthermore, as a freelance composer, he managed to receive the 2nd prize in the 5th international composition competition “Coups de Vents” in France in June 2015 with his composition “Ethnominimal” for symphonic wind orchestra.

Since September 2014, Marios has been studying Symphonic and Operatic Conducting at the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory, named after Rimsky-Korsakov, under Alexander Polishchuk, who was himself a true student of one of the greatest pedagogues of the conducting technique in the world, Ilya Musin. Marios is an active performer and composer as well, in parallel with his conducting studies.
