Brahms Johannes geb. in Hamburg, 7. Mai 1833, Wien, 3. April 1897. Brahms wuchs in Hamburg auf, von wo aus er schon in jungen Jahren Konzertreisen unternahm und dabei auf sein Talent aufmerksam machte. 1857 bis 1859 dirigiert er jeweils von September bis Dezember den Hofchor in Detmold. 1862 übersiedelte er nach Wien, wo er sich 1868 endgültig niederließ. 1872 bis 1875 leitete er als artistischer Direktor die Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in der Kaiserstadt. Der als Schöpfer von vier großen Symphonien, zweier Klavierkonzerte, eines Violinkonzertes, des Deutschen Requiems, zahlreicher Chor-, Kammermusik- und Klavierwerke sowie von Liedern zu den Großen der Musikgeschichte zählende Johannes Brahms, schrieb 1880 als Dank für die Ernennung zum Ehrendoktor der Universität Breslaueine Akademische Festouvertüre für großes Orchester. In diesem Werk verwendet er Melodien aus bekannten Studentenliedern. In einem Brief am 2. Oktober 1880 an seinen Verleger Simrock empfiehlt Brahms, die Akademische Festouvertüre für Militärorchester setzen zu lassen, und er betont: Das lockt mich selbst, wenn ich nur genauer damit Bescheid wüßte.
