Nachdem er als Solist Aufsehen erregt hatte, wurde er 1857 als Professor für Kornett an das Pariser Konservatorium berufen. Für seine Schüler schrieb er Übungen, aus denen schließlich sein grundlegendes Unterrichtswerk hervorging. Berühmt wurde sein Karneval von Venedig, ein Solostück, das in zahlreichen Bearbeitungen - auch mit Blasorchester-Begleitung - gedruckt vorliegt.
