Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) Italienischer Opernkomponist; der "Schwan von Pesaro". Beide Eltern Rossinis waren Berufsmusiker, der Vater Waldhornist und gleichzeitig Inspektor der Städtischen Schlachthöfe, die Mutter Sängerin. Der kleine Giocchino erhielt schon früh Unterricht im Gesang sowie im Horn- und Klavierspiel. Die einaktige Oper La cambiale di matrimonio, die er mit 18 Jahren komponierte hatte, erregte durch ihren Witz und ihre Orginalität beim venezianischen Publikum Aufmerksamkeit. Nun war Rossinis Zukunft gesichert. In den nächsten 20 Jahren folgte eine Reihe frischer, geistvoller und brillianter Opern. 1813 erschien L'Italiana in Algeri , 1816 Il barbiere di Siviglia. Das römische Publikum überwand rasch die anfängliche Skepsis gegen Rossinis Vertonung eines Stoffes, den Paisiello schon 1782 behandelt hatte.
Der Barbier von Sevilla gilt als der Gipfel der italienischen komischen Oper, Rossini war noch keine 24 Jahre alt, als er ihn schrieb. Im selben Jahr kam sein "Otello" auf die Bühne. Auch "Cenerentola" (1817) zählt zu den berühmtesten Opern unter den fast 40 Erfolgswerken Rossinis.
Im Herbst 1824 ging er nach Paris und wurde "Premier Compositeur" König Karls X. sowie "Generalinspektor des Gesangswesens" in Frankreich. Rossini wußte, daß er sich die Pariser Bühnen erobern musste, um seinen Werken nachhaltigen Erfolg zu sichern. Dieses Ziel verwirklichte er auf wahrhaft glänzende Weise - am glänzendsten aber mit seiner letzten Oper "Guillaume Tell" (nach Schillers Wilhelm Tell), die im Sommer 1829 an der Opéra aufgeführt wurde. Dieses Werk bezeichnet, gemeinsam mit der "Stummen von Portici" von Auber, den Beginn der französischen großen Oper. 1832 bis 1842 schrieb Rossini sein berühmtes "Stabat Mater". Daß er nach seinem "Wilhelm Tell" kaum mehr etwas komponierte, ist niemals befriedigend erklärt worden. Aber er blieb ein großzügiger Gastgeber, und seine pointierten Bonmots machten überall die Runde. Die letzten Lebensjahre verbrachte Rossini in Passy, wo ihn viele Musiker, u.a. Wagner und Sullivan, besuchten.
