Chopin Frédéric François geb. in Zelazowa Wola bei Warschau, 1. März 1810, Paris, 17. Oktober 1849. Als Sohn eines französischen Emigranten und einer Polin geboren, trat Chopin bereits im Alter von acht Jahren als pianistisches Wunderkind vor die Öffentlichkeit. Als fertiger Klaviervirtuose und Komponist verließ er 1830 seine Heimat, konzertierte in Wien und in München und ließ sich in Paris nieder. Dort fand er rasch Zugang zu Künstlerkreisen, verkehrte mit Liszt, Berlioz, Meyerbeer, Balzac, Heine - und galt als gesuchter Klavierlehrer. Als sich Anzeichen einer schweren Brusterkrankung einstellten, nahm er auf Mallorca seinen Wohnsitz. George Sand, die von ihm schwärmerisch verehrte Dichterin, begleitete und pflegte ihn. Nach vorübergehender Besserung konzertierte er 1848 in London. Doch schon ein Jahr später starb er.
