Porter Cole (Albert)
*Peru, Indiana, 9. Juni 1891, +Santa Monica, Kalifornien, 15. Oktober 1964. Porter studierte 1915/16 Harmonielehre und Kontrapunkt an der Harvard University. Damals kamen seine ersten "Songs" am Broadway zur Aufführung. 1917 ließ er sich in Paris nieder, wo er sein musikalisches Können bei Vincent d'Indy vervollständigte. Als Komponist wandte er sich der Unterhaltungs und Filmmusik sowie dem Ballett zu und hatte damit weltweit Erfolg. 1937 in einen Unfall verwickelt, der ihn künftig körperlich behinderte, schienen seine Einfälle zu versiegen. Erst 1948, mit dem Musical "Kiss me Kate", trat er erneut an die Öffentlichkeit. Es folgten 1953 das Musical "Can Can" und schließlich der Film "High Society" (1956), in dem Bing Crosby und Grace Kelly "True Love" sangen.
