*Eutin, Holstein, 18./19. (?) November 1786, +London, 5. Juni 1826. Während einer bewegten Jugendzeit - der Vater war zeitweise Direktor einer wandernden Schauspieltruppe - erhielt Weber u. a. Musikunterricht bei Michael Haydn in Salzburg, Abbé Vogler in Wien und J. N. Kalcher in München. Nachdem er verschiedene Stellungen jeweils nur kurze Zeit ausgefüllt hatte, wurde er 1816 Musikdirektor der Deutschen Oper in Dresden; diesem Institut verschaffte er neben der von F. Morlacchi geleiteten Italienischen Oper hohes Ansehen. Mit der Oper "Der Freischütz" (1820) schuf Weber "das größte Ereignis auf der deutschen Opernbühne zwischen Mozart und R. Wagner" (Riemann). In der Verwendung der Holz- und Blechbläser, sowohl als Solo- wie als Tutti-Instrumente, schlug Weber neue Wege ein.
