Aram Iljitsch Khachaturian wurde am 6. Juni 1903 in Tlflis, Armenien, geboren. Schon frühh zeigte sich eine musikalische Begabung, doch war es ihm als Sohn eines armen Buchbinders nicht möglich, eine Ausbildung zu machen. Im Herbst 1921 - nachdem die russische Revolution die sozialen Schranken heruntergerissen hatte - kam er nach Moskau. Er besuchte einen Vorkurs an der moskauer Universität und schrieb sich 1922 für die Fächer Physik und Mathematik ein, welche er während drei Jahren studierte. Freunde drängten ihn, sich ernsthaft der Musik zu widmen und ab 1923 studierte er Violoncello an der Gnessin-Musikschule in Moskau. Auf Anraten von Mikhail Gnessin machte er die Aufnahmeprüfung ans Moskauer Konservatorium, wo er ab 1930 bei Nikolai Miaskovsky (Schüler von Lladov und Rimsky-Korsakov) Komposition studierte.
Ab 1950 unterrichtete Kchachaturian Komposition an der Gnessin-Musikschule und am Konservatorium in Moskau. Er dirigierte auch mit grossem Erfolg verschiedene Orchester innerhalb und ausserhalb der Sowjet-Union. Als er 1950 auf einer Konzerttournee Rom besuchte, soll er von den historischen Bauten so sehr beeindruckt gewesen sein, dass er zu der Ballettmusik zu Spartacus angeregt worden sei. Die sinfonische Suite Spartacus wurde lange vor der Uraufführung des Balletts (Kirov-Theater, Leningrad (St. Petersbug), 2. Dezember 1956) aufgeführt.
Kchachaturian schieb zudem insgesamt ca. 25 Filmmusiken und mehrere Bände Kinder Klavier-Musik.
Er starb am 1. Mai 1978 in Moskau.
