Allen Ostrander composer / arranger

Allen E. Ostrander wurde am 14. Dezember 1909 in Lynn, Massachusetts, geboren. Er begann sein Posaunenstudium 1923 bei Aaron Harris und schloss 1932 das Ithaca Conservatory of Music mit einem Bachelor of Science in Instrumentalmusik ab, wo er bei Patrick Conway und Ernest Posaune studierte Williams. Das spätere Studium bei Simone Mantia, Gardell Simmons und Walter Lillebeck trug ebenfalls zu seiner bemerkenswerten professionellen Karriere als Spieler bei.

Nach seinem Abschluss besuchte er drei Jahre lang die National Orchestral Association in New York City, bevor er seine erste berufliche Position als Bassposaunist beim National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC, antrat. Nach einer Saison beim Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra im Jahr 1937 wurde er von Arturo ausgewählt Toscanini war Bassposaunist bei der NBC Symphony, eine Position, die er bis 1946 innehatte. Zwischen 1942 und 1945 verbrachte er drei Jahre in der US Army, bevor er für ein letztes Jahr zu NBC zurückkehrte. Von 1946 bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1975 war er Bassposaunist bei den New York Philharmonic.

Zusätzlich zu seiner herausragenden Karriere als Spieler unterrichtete Ostrander an den Fakultäten von West Virginia Wesleyan, Julliard, der Hartt School of Music, dem Columbia Teacher's College und dem Ithaca College. Er war auch Co-Designer der Reynolds Contempora-Doppelventil-Bassposaune und hat eine Reihe von Methodenbüchern für dieses moderne Instrument verfasst. Neben seinen Originalkompositionen für Bassposaune hat er zahlreiche andere Blechbläserwerke arrangiert, transkribiert und herausgegeben, von denen über einhundert noch gedruckt sind.

Seit er sich 1975 in seine jetzige Heimat in Ithaca, New York, zurückzog, wurde er von der International Trombone Association für seine Lebensleistungen geehrt und erhielt 1993 einen Ehrendoktor in Musik vom Ithaca College.

Herr Ostrander starb 1994.
