In 1964 I met the American composer, conductor, pianist and educationist Aaron Copland (1900-1990) who was in The Netherlands during an European concert tour. I keep most pleasant memories of his performances and of our conversations. In memory of that great man I made in 1995 a new version of a small composition that I had written in 1970 for the Silver Jubilee of the Metropole Orchestra (of the Dutch Radio Institution) and that was called 'An Indoor Overture'. This short work is a kind of answer to Copland's 'An Outdoor Overture' (1938) in which also light and serious music are harmoniously mixed.Willem Strietman

En 1964 j'ai rencontré le compositeur, chef d'orchestre, pianiste et pédagogue américain Aaron Copland (1900-1990) lors d'une tournée qu'il effectua en Europe et qui l'amena également aux Pays-Bas. Je garde d'excellents souvenirs de ses concerts et de nos conversations. C'est à sa mémoire qu'en 1995 j'ai écrit une nouvelle version d'une pièce que j'avais composée en 1970 à l'occasion du 25ème anniversaire de 'l'Orchestre Métropole' de la Radio néerlandaise et qui s'intitule 'An Indoor Overture' (Ouverture pour la salle de concert). Cette pièce brève est un pendant de l'oeuvre de Copland 'An Outdoor Overture' (Ouverture pour le plein air) composée en 1938 et qui marie de façon harmonieuse musique légère et musique sérieuse.Willem Strietman

In 1964 ontmoette ik de Amerikaanse componist-dirigent-pianist-pedagoog Aaron Copland (1900-1990) die tijdens een tournee door Europa ook Nederland aandeed. Aan zijn optreden en gesprekken bewaar ik dierbare herinneringen. Te zijner nagedachtenis maakte ik in 1995 een nieuwe versie van een werkje dat ik in 1970 t.g.v. het zilveren jubileum van het Metropole-Orkest (behorend tot de Nederlandse Omroepstichting) componeerde n.l. An Indoor Overture'. Dit korte opus is een resonans op Coplands 'An Outdoor Overture' uit 1938 waarin ook de lichte en ernstige muze harmonieus samengaan.Willem Strietman.
