The American folksong Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair is the basis for this set of variations. Beginning very subtly, the music then turns to a driving Latin. The percussion section keeps the groove going with their arsenal of Latin instruments. The original tempo returns for a sweeping treatment of the theme and closes very delicately.
