On May 25, 2011, a major fire broke out north of Antwerp in the Kalmthouter Heide nature reserve. Within a very short time, more than 600 hectares of heathland were engulfed in flames. The impact on the surrounding environment was enormous. The fire left a deep mark on the residents, the managers of the nature reserve, and the firefighters who risked their lives for days fighting the blaze. The piece *Inferno* begins majestically and grandly, just like the Kalmthouter Heide. Shortly thereafter, the magnificent nature the pure beauty can be heard in the introduction of the composition's theme. What follows is the musical depiction of the fire on the heath. Even the firefighting helicopters and the initial conversations held at the Kalmthout fire station after the emergency call came in can be heard. One fact, however, remains at the heart of this composition: the purity and splendor of the heathland's natural landscape. This is expressed in the theme at the beginning of the work, which recurs throughout the piece. This is also the case toward the end, where it gives way to a peaceful conclusion, carried by the hope for the swift restoration of this wonderful nature reserve.
