Dances with Winds

Dances with Winds Shelley Hanson

Maestro Band Series

PROGRAM NOTES
Dances with Winds is based on folk tunes from three very different European regions.

Movement 1, Gaida, is named after the Macedonian bagpipe, which is less strident that the Celtic bagpipe. The two famous bagpipe tunes that are used show that a gaida can sound either very plaintive or very joyful.

Movement 2, The Irish Star, uses the well-known Irish folk tune Star of the County Down. Most often played in march tempo, this tune also can be performed as a waltz. Both versions are used here.

Movement 3, Serbian Dance, is a very fast folk dance called a kolo. This particular tune is often referred to as Ciganski Urnebes. Urnebes is a very popular type of Serbian salad, and Ciganski means Gypsy, so this wild dance is a Gypsy Salad.

PERFORMANCE NOTES
The instrumentation of Dances with Winds is flexible. Although the ideal instrument is listed first for each part, only the flute and clarinet parts must be played by those instruments. This piece may be played by a woodwind choir, or if desired parts may be doubled for performance by a small band.

The percussion parts are entirely optional. If only one percussionist is available, the Percussion 1 part should be used in preference to Timpani/Xylophone. Percussion dynamics are often marked at a lesser level than the ensemble as a whole to encourage the percussionist to play sensitively.

Each movement may be played separately or as a complete work.

Movement I, Gaida, is based on two Macedonian folk tunes for the Gajda, a bagpipe. The slightly altered spelling used on the score is to help avoid mispronunciation. The ornamented solo parts may be played very freely, and ornamentation may be altered to suit the player's technique. As marked in the score, the rapid technical passages in the second section may be simplified if necessary by leaving out the second note in the triplets. Because of the flexible instrumentation, it was not possible to mark the ideal articulation for each potential instrument. Players should feel free to alter articulations as needed to facilitate the technical demands. Some woodwind fingerings have been marked in the parts. The percussion part is a guide to the style, but it is not intended that the player try to play the part exactly as written. In the first section, the player should try to play with several different tone qualities and dynamics, as a folk drum would be played.

Movement 2, The Irish Star, is based on the well-known folk tune Star of the Country Down. Again, players may articulate as needed in the rapid technical passages, and articulations need not be the same for each player. The optional percussion part simulates the Irish folk drum, the bodhran, and the bones. If a player is skilled on the bodhran, it is better to omit some of the written part to enable changing to that instrument. The part need not be played exactly as written, but may be improvised in the style.

Movement 3, Serbian Dance, is a very fast folk dance called a kolo. If percussion is used, the player may improvise the part tastefully. The written part is a guide, but skilled players may prefer to use their own creativity on the part. The glissandi and rips in the woodwinds and horns (or saxophones) should be joyful, tasteless, and crass.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Shelley Hanson's compositions have been performed throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Australia. Also a conductor, record producer, and clarinetist, she and her band, Klezmer and All That Jazz, have performed her Concerto for Klezmer Band and Orchestra with the Minnesota Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and many other groups. Klezmer and All That Jazz recorded traditional and her original music for the award-winning audio book version of the classic Yiddish folk tale The Dybbuk. Principal Clarinetist of the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra, she has recorded orchestral and chamber music for Virgin Records, Teldec, Innova, and others, and was a soloist for the soundtrack of the feature film Out of the Wilderness. After receiving a PhD in Performance, Music Theory, and Music Literature from Michigan State University, Hanson conducted university orchestras and wind ensembles for 15 years.

COCHRAN CHAMBER COMMISSIONING PROJECT
Inspired and created by Jim Cochran, owner of Shattinger Music Company, the Cochran Chamber Commissioning Project was formed to introduce, inspire, and educate young musicians as to the joys of chamber music through shared music making and commissioning. It is the desire of the commission to contribute significant new repertoire for the chamber wind medium, especially for schools and institutions whose ensembles are challenged, not so much by their collective level of experience, but by their numbers and instrumentation. The following works represent the commission through 2008.

1999 Woodscapes Clark McAlister
2000 Serenade for 15 Instruments Michael Weinstein
2001 Three Preludes Scott McAlister
2002 A Quilting Bee Clark McAlister
2003 An American Tapestry Daniel Kallman
2004 French Dances Revisited Adam Gorb
2007 Six Chamber Dances Rolf Rudin
2008 Dances with Winds Shelley Hanson
