New edition, with preface by Gerard McBurney. The work was composed in 193338 for one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century, Gregor Piatigorsky. McBurney explains that, somehow this concerto had come to seem jinxed to the composer. And when, in 1947, he heard it in Moscow once again, this time played by the young Mstislav Rostropovich, he decided to recast it (albeit using much of the same material) as an entirely new piece, the Sinfonia Concertante, op 125. The earlier version never entirely disappeared, however, with a scattering of cellists always preferring it to the later one. And in recent years, it has found new favour and new champions, its spectacularly difficult cello writing and virtuosic orchestral effects offering a brilliance, pungency and fascination all of their own.

Une nouvelle édition avec une préface de Gerard McBurney. La pièce a été composée entre 1933 et 1938 pour l'un des plus grands violoncellistes du XXème siècle, Gregor Piatigorsky. McBurney explique que « ce concerto semble avoir ensorcelé le compositeur. Lorsqu'il l'entendit à nouveau en 1947 à Moscou, joué par le soliste Mstislav Rostropovich, il décida de créer une nouvelle pièce (même s'il y a utilisé quasiment le même matériau), la Sinfonia Concertante, op 125. L'ancienne version n'a jamais vraiment disparu, mais la plupart des violoncellistes préféraient la nouvelle. Depuis quelques années, cette ancienne version a trouvé un deuxième succès. Son spectaculaire niveau de difficulté et la virtuosité de l'orchestre suscitent une brillance, un mordant et une fascination très particuliers. »
