This is a very special work, written as it is for brass quintet (trumpets I and II, horn, trombone, bass-tuba) and symphonic band, but also available in a version for brass quintet only, which enlarges the practical possibilities for performance enormously. Lancen has certainly exceeded himself in this brilliant work. Following its premiere during the W.A.S.B.E. Congress in Boston in 1987, the 'Boston Globe' wrote: 'Far simpler but its own way more original was the 'Maskerade for Brass Quintet and Band' by Serge Lancen. Its eight movements are unabashedly tonal, throughout a cheerful carnival of simple, sincere ideas worked out with skill and good humor'. The premiere was given by the Dutch National Youth Symphonic Band conducted by Jan Cober.

Cette oeuvre unique est conçue pour quintette de cuivres (2 trompettes, cor, trombone et tuba basse) et orchestre d'harmonie. Une version pour seul quintette de cuivres est égalementéditée, ce qui facilite les possibilités d'exécution. Lancen s'est visiblement surpassé. Après la création lors du congrès W.A.S.B.E. à Boston en juillet 1987, le Boston Globe remarqua: 'Plus simple, mais bien plus original fut Mascarade de Lancen. Les huit parties sont sans doute tonales, le tout étant un carnaval explosif, composé d'idées simples et intègres, et travaillées avec maîtrise et bonne humeur'. L'oeuvre fut créée par l'Orchestre National d'Harmonie de Jeunes des Pays-Bas sous la direction de Jan Cober.

Dit is een zeer bijzonder werk, het is geschreven voor koperkwintet (trp I + II, hrn, trb, bastuba) en harmonieorkest, maar er is ook een versie verschenen voor koperkwintet alléén, wat de praktische uitvoerbaarheid enorm vergroot.Lancen heeft met dit werkelijk schitterende werk zichzelf overtroffen. Na de premiere tijdens het W.A.S.B.E. congres 1987 in Boston schreef het vooraanstaande blad de 'Boston Globe':'Simpeler, maar op z'n eigen manier origineler was Mascarade van Lancen. De acht delen zijn zonder twijfel tonaal, het geheel een uitbundig carnaval van eenvoudige, integere ideeën, uitgewerkt met vakmanschap en gevoel voor humor'. De première werd gegeven door het Nederlands Nationaal Jeugd Harmonieorkest o.l.v. Jan Cober.
