Composer's note: "When pianist Inon Barnatan asked me to write him a new work, he had a particular stipulation: that I somehow connect my piece with Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit, which he would program alongside my new work. This seemed an intriguing proposition. I decided not to refer to any musical material in Gaspard, but took my cue from the textual elements that accompany the score. The title of the work comes from a collection of poems by Aloysius Bertrand. It is generally translated as The Treasurer (or Jewel Keeper) of the Night. I imagined jewels gleaming from some narrow light source in the otherwise enshrouding darkness. This was my staring point: light at night. Indeed the poems that Ravel selects from Bertrand's collection refer to light with the general context of darkness. In creating my piece, Glow, I imagined all the myriad ways objects are lit at night and settled on seven: moonlight (a not to Ravel), a simple spark momentarily illuminating darkness, a lighthouse in the distance, the metric flashing of a strobe light in a nightclub, the colourful exuberance of fireworks exploding above, a spiral galaxy slowly rotating in distant space, and the embers of a fire as it fades. - Sebastian Currier -

Remarque du compositeur : « Quand le pianiste Inon Barnatan m'a demandé de composer une nouvelle uvre pour lui, il a posé une condition très spéciale : il fallait que je relie de quelque manière que ce soit ma pièce à Gaspard de la Nuit de Ravel, qu'il voulait jouer en concert avec ma nouvelle uvre. Cela me parut un objectif fascinant. Je décidais alors, non pas de recourir au matériau musical de Gaspard, mais de m'inspirer des éléments textuels de la partition. Le titre de l'uvre de Ravel vient d'un recueil de poèmes d'Aloysius Bertrand, parfois traduit en « Le trésorier de la nuit ». Je m'imaginais donc des bijoux plongés dans l'obscurité qui s'allument dans la lumière blafarde d'une source lointaine. Ce fut mon point de départ : la lumière dans la nuit. Les poèmes choisis par Ravel dans le recueil de Bertrand se rapportent également à la lumière dans un contexte général de pénombre. Pour ma composition Glow, je me suis figuré les multitudes de possibilités selon lesquelles des objets peuvent être éclairés dans la nuit, et je me suis décidé pour sept d'entre elles : la lumière de la lune (un hommage à Ravel), une simple étincelle qui éclaire la pénombre pour un court instant, un phare dans le lointain, le clignotement métrique d'une boîte de nuit, l'exubérance colorée d'un feu d'artifice qui explose, une galaxie en forme de spirale qui tourne lentement au fin fond de l'univers, et les braises rougeoyantes d'un feu qui s'éteint. » Sebastian Currier
