In the summer of 1852, Vier Stücke [Four Pieces'] for viola and piano by Robert Schumann were published under the title Märchenbilder [Fairy-Tale Pictures'] by the Kassel publishing house Luckhardt, with a particularly expressive vignette on the title page. Unusual were both this title Märchenbilder, on the one hand, and the scoring with a solo viola, on the other. With the viola in a soloistic role in chamber music, Schumann's Märchenbilder, Op. 113, offers a rather unfamiliar, but all the more delightful sound.

À l'été 1852 parurent chez l'éditeur Luckhardt à Kassel « Quatre Pièces » (Vier Stücke) de Robert Schumann, pour alto et piano, sous le titre de « Märchenbilder » (Images de contes), accompagnées d'une gravure de titre particulièrement expressive. Inhabituels étaient donc ici aussi bien ce titre de Märchenbilder, que la nomenclature de la pièce, avec alto solo. L'alto de ces Märchenbilder op. 113 de Schumann, dans un rôle de chambriste-soliste, fait entendre une sonorité relativement inhabituelle, mais d'autant plus séduisante.
