It is basically incomprehensible that numerous march lovers assume tacitly that a "true" march can only be composed by a director or musician of the military. This attitude, however, is not at all justified.
This is firmly underlined by the sparkling march "Kameraden auf See" ("Comrades of the Sea") by Robert Kuessel who is always associated with the navy. The composer who hailed from the province of Silesia never had any contacts with the armed forces: he rather had primarly been a composer of soundtracks before and after the war. However, some of his marches survived with "Kameraden auf See" being frequently performed. It is undoubtedly the most popular navy march with German military bands.
