Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) is Finland's most famous composer. His works include tone poems, chamber music, works for the stage, works for chorus, and solo pieces. His seven symphonies are widely considered masterpieces of the genre and are still performed regularly throughout the world. Sibelius composed prolifically from the 1880s until the mid-1920s, however he did not produce a single major work during the last thirty years of his life.

Alla Marcia finds its origins as one of the two intermezzi in the 44-minute Karelia Music composed in 1893 for a lottery arranged by the Vyborg Students' Association to promote popular education in the province of Vyborg. It also exists as the third movement of the much shorter Karelia Suite, published in 1894. Karelia Suite remains one of Sibelius's most popular works.

The source material for this arrangement is the manuscript located in the National Library of Finland. The key has been transposed up a semi-tone from A major to B-flat major. The percussion parts have been retained exactly from the original.
