The Richard Wagner Complete Edition presents the composer's entire output for the first time in a reliable form. The conductor Michael Balling, in the early years of the 20th century, attempted to make Wagners work more accessible for research and performance, but the edition only reached 10 volumes some with grave shortcomings and was discontinued after Ballings death in 1925. A further attempt at a complete edition by Otto Strobel was abandoned at the preliminary stages.This third attempt at a complete edition will be the first scholarly, critical edition, based on an evaluation of all the accessible source materials and the latest findings of serious Wagner research. As the edition is also intended for practical performance, the musical text has been kept free of philological insertions; these are listed in the appendices of each volume in the Critical Commentary. Numerous, partly unpublished works some relatively unknown and variant versions are published here for the first time. The edition presents authentic texts for Wagner specialists and researchers and critically based performing materials. Contrary to widely held opinions, even the well-known works of Wagner are not necessarily available in reliable editions. The genesis, history and performances directed by Wagner himself are extensively documented so as to present as complete an image as possible of Wagners compositional intentions.

Große tragische Oper in 5 Akten - Erster Akt - Partitur

Die Richard Wagner-Gesamtausgabe macht zum ersten Mal das gesamte Schaffen Wagners in zuverlässigen Ausgaben zugänglich. Ein erster Versuch, das Werk Wagners für Wissenschaft und Praxis zu erschließen, wurde zu Beginn dieses Jahrhunderts von dem Dirigenten Michael Balling unternommen, gelangte aber über die Edition von zehn Bänden, die überdies gravierende Mängel aufweisen, nicht hinaus und wurde nach Ballings Tod (1925) eingestellt. Ein weiterer Versuch von Otto Strobel blieb in den Vorarbeiten stecken.
Der nunmehr dritte Versuch einer Gesamtausgabe ist die erste kritische, wissenschaftlich fundierte Edition, erarbeitet auf der Grundlage sämtlicher heute erreichbarer Quellen und der neuesten Erkenntnisse der Wagnerforschung. Zugleich ist sie für die musikalische Praxis bestimmt. Der Notentext bleibt darum von philologischen Kennzeichnungen frei. Der philologischen Rechtfertigung der Ausgabe dienen Kritische Berichte, die im Anhang der einzelnen Bände erscheinen.
Zahlreiche bislang völlig unbekannte, zum Teil unveröffentlichte Werke und vor allem Werkfassungen werden zum ersten Mal publiziert. Zugleich wird den Wagneraufführungen ein gesichertes Material und Wagnerforschern wie -liebhabern ein authentischer Text bereitgestellt; denn entgegen einer weitverbreiteten Ansicht liegen auch die bekannten Werke Wagners durchaus nicht durchweg in zuverlässigen Ausgaben vor. In ausführlichen Dokumentationen zu allen Werken werden Entstehung, Werkgeschichte und von Wagner selbst geleitete Aufführungen dargestellt, so daß sich ein nahezu lückenloses Bild der Intentionen Wagners ergibt.
