The transcription is dedicated to Dr Ernst Roth, music editor at Boosey & Hawkes, and was approved by Strauss. The manuscript came to light a few years ago during relocation of archived materials at Boosey & Hawkes. A pupil of d'Indy and Dukas, Gustave Samazeuilh (18771967) was a life-long friend and supporter of Strauss. He made many piano transcriptions of orchestral works; the addition of Strauss's Metamorphosen to the solo piano repertory will be welcomed by pianists and audiences alike.
